Where Gary stands

Part-time Legislature
“Gary Howell has a great idea for taxpayers of Michigan and he’s doing something about it… Along with advocating for a part-time legislature and the significant salary cuts that go with that, Howell is advocating for the elimination of retirement and medical insurance benefits for legislators, who with term limits tally just six years on the job but receive taxpayer funded benefits for a lifetime…Michigan is one of just four states that continue to fund a fulltime legislature…As Howell points out, last year’s wrangling and machinations over the state’s budget crisis – last minute, no less – is proof that the legislators’ have grown accustomed to milking the luxury of time to take care of important business, like how much funding schools and municipalities can expect for their own budgets”. Tri-City Times editorial, Jan. 23, 2008

Pro-Life
Gary Howell is a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He is a member of Right to Life of Michigan and is one hundred percent pro-life. Gary has been endorsed by Michigan Citizens for Traditional Values and has been rated as meeting all endorsement criteria by Michigan Right-to-Life.

Second Amendment
Gary Howell has been an avid sportsman and hunter his entire life. He is a member of the National Rifle Association. He will defend the Second Amendment right of all citizens to own and bear arms. Gary is a U.S. Army veteran who earned his marksmanship medal while defending our country.

Jobs for Michigan
Michigan’s bloated state bureaucracy is hampering our efforts to overcome the current economic crisis. Government red tape and bureaucratic delays often act as impediments to job providers. Gary Howell believes that the State needs to actively encourage job creation. The recent 23 % increase in taxes on job providers is an example of the Michigan Legislature leading our state in the wrong direction. Innovative job training must be provided so that our young people are ready to compete in a 21st Century environment.

Equitable State Funding for Education
As a school board president, Gary understands the negative results of inequitable educational funding by state government. Currently, the Detroit School district receives thousands of dollars more in state aid, per student, than any of the districts in Lapeer County. State school funding needs to be reformed to provide an even playing field for all students. Better technical training for students entering the job force is a must to lead Michigan into the future.

Protecting Great Lakes Water and our Environment
One of Michigan’s greatest resources is its proximity to the Great Lakes. States which have lured away too many of Michigan’s best jobs are now eyeing ways to siphon millions of gallons of fresh water from the Great Lakes. Gary Howell will oppose any attempts by states outside the Great Lakes region from buying, diverting or otherwise draining any of Michigan’s fresh water resources. Gary will also fight to put an end to using Michigan as a dumping ground for Canadian and out-of-state garbage.
